Swimming has begun.....

Our swimming time has begun and we have already had the first two of our sessions at the Levin Aquatic Centre.  This group is in training for the Interschool Swimming Sports which take place early next term.

Measuring Volume, Capacity and Mass

Our maths focus for this term has been based around Volume, Capacity and Mass.

One of the activities we are exploring is to do with displacement - by measuring the amount of water that spills over the top of container, we can determine the volume and capacity of the object that has caused the water to spill.

Mrs Young then set the challenge of finding a large stone that was exactly 100g in weight.  We had to measure how much water each stone displaced until we found the right one.

One final challenge was to create a milk container that could hold exactly 4 litres of milk and fit in a fridge door that was 50cm long, 10cm wide and 50cm high.  Here is the most successful design.....

The last of our Run, Jump, Throw

Here are the last of our Run, Jump, Throw photos.....two of our clever high-jumpers and a hammer we managed to lodge into one of our tall trees!!!

How tall is that tree?

Our school is blessed with massive trees - most of which we are allowed to climb!  One of our teachers, Ms Coogan, posed the problem of working out how tall a tree was without actually climbing it with a rather long tape measure.  We found out about isosceles triangles and how they can help us to measure the height of something - ingenious!

The action of Run, Jump, Throw!

We have spent 4 sessions now with Cameron who has been guiding us through various track and field sports - and have once again, been able to launch a piece of equipment high into the trees!!!

Here are some photos of us giving things a go, learning and refining skills and most importantly, having fun!
